The Speaker of the Zamfara State House of Assembly, Bilyaminu Isma’il Moriki, along with all 13 members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the assembly, have officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The mass defection was announced during an extraordinary sitting in Gusau, the state capital. According to a statement from the Chief Press Secretary to the Assembly, Bello Madaro Kurya, Speaker Moriki stated that the decision to join Governor Dauda Lawal in the APC was unanimous, citing internal leadership disputes and a protracted crisis within the PDP.

During the plenary, the Speaker read the resignation letters of the defecting lawmakers. He emphasized that they were joining the APC alongside their teeming supporters who had voted them into office during the 2023 general elections. He also commended their constituents for their support of the move and pledged to continue serving their interests.

The defecting lawmakers include the Deputy Speaker and the Majority Leader. Their defection follows Governor Dauda Lawal’s recent switch from the PDP to the APC.

The statement further noted that the lawmakers are scheduled to be formally received into the APC on Tuesday, alongside the governor, at a ceremony in Gusau.
