Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the procurement and deployment of new military hardware to strengthen Nigeria’s armed forces as troops intensify operations against armed groups and insurgents across the country.
The approval, announced on Friday by defence authorities, is aimed at boosting the operational capacity of the Nigerian Armed Forces in ongoing counterterrorism and security operations, particularly in the country’s North East and North West regions.
According to officials, the new equipment will include advanced combat platforms, surveillance systems and other strategic assets designed to enhance the military’s ability to detect, track and neutralise armed groups threatening national security.
Security analysts say the move signals a renewed commitment by the government to strengthen frontline troops who have been battling insurgent groups such as Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province for more than a decade.
The approval comes as Nigerian forces step up coordinated land and air offensives targeting insurgent enclaves and criminal networks involved in kidnappings, attacks on communities and the disruption of economic activities.
Military officials say the additional hardware will significantly improve intelligence gathering, mobility and firepower for troops operating in difficult terrains.
“The acquisition of modern equipment will greatly enhance operational effectiveness and ensure that our troops maintain the upper hand against terrorists and other criminal elements,” a defence source familiar with the development told local media.
Nigeria has faced persistent security challenges ranging from insurgency in the North East to banditry and kidnappings in the North West and parts of the North Central region. Authorities say strengthening the military’s capabilities remains a key part of the government’s broader strategy to restore stability and protect civilians.
Government officials have also reiterated their commitment to supporting troops with improved logistics, welfare and intelligence coordination as operations continue across multiple theatres.
