Agents of Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) were on Saturday morning sorted and tagged in Karu, a satellite town on the outskirts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), ahead of the commencement of voting in the 2026 Area Council elections.

As of 8:00am local time, party coordinators were seen organising accredited agents and dispatching them to their respective polling units across the FCT’s six area councils — Abuja Municipal, Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje, Abaji and Kwali.

The exercise, conducted under tight supervision by party officials, is part of pre-election protocols aimed at ensuring representation at polling stations throughout the territory. Party agents play a crucial role in Nigeria’s electoral process, observing proceedings, monitoring compliance with guidelines and reporting irregularities where necessary.

Saturday’s vote is being closely watched as a key political barometer in the nation’s capital. Though area council elections are considered grassroots contests, analysts say outcomes in the FCT often carry symbolic weight, reflecting broader public sentiment ahead of future national elections.

Security operatives were also visible in parts of Karu and adjoining districts, maintaining order as electoral activities commenced. There were no immediate reports of disruptions at the time of filing this report.

Nigeria’s electoral framework allows registered political parties to deploy agents to polling units, collation centres and other designated points to observe the conduct of elections.

Voting is expected to continue throughout the day, with results anticipated later in accordance with guidelines issued by the electoral authorities.

More updates to follow as the situation develops.
