United States President Donald Trump has announced what he described as the formal end of the war in Gaza, unveiling a far-reaching, multibillion-dollar reconstruction and international stabilisation strategy aimed at rebuilding the devastated enclave and preventing renewed hostilities.
Speaking at the White House on Thursday, Trump said the ceasefire agreement — brokered with regional and international partners — would pave the way for “a new phase of security, reconstruction and political transition” in Gaza after months of intense fighting between Israel Defense Forces and the Palestinian armed group Hamas.
A “comprehensive reset”
Trump framed the initiative as a “comprehensive reset” that would combine humanitarian relief, infrastructure reconstruction and the deployment of an internationally backed stabilisation mechanism.
“This war has taken a terrible toll on innocent civilians,” he said. “Today, we are ending the fighting and launching the largest rebuilding effort Gaza has ever seen.”
According to US officials, the plan includes:
• A multibillion-dollar reconstruction fund supported by the US, European and Gulf partners
• Immediate humanitarian corridors to accelerate food, medical and fuel deliveries
• The restoration of electricity, water and hospital services
• An internationally supervised security framework designed to prevent a resurgence of armed conflict
Large parts of Gaza have been reduced to rubble after months of bombardment and ground operations, leaving critical infrastructure severely damaged and displacing hundreds of thousands of people.
International stabilisation mechanism
Senior US officials said the stabilisation strategy would involve regional stakeholders, potentially including Arab states, to oversee security coordination and governance reforms during a transitional period.
While Trump did not provide full operational details, he suggested that international partners would play a central role in securing border crossings and supporting local administrative structures.
Diplomatic sources indicated that discussions have been under way with Egypt, Qatar and other regional actors to ensure compliance with the ceasefire and to prevent weapons smuggling into the territory.
Political and regional implications
The announcement is likely to reshape political dynamics in both Israel and the Palestinian territories. Israeli leaders have repeatedly insisted that military operations would continue until Hamas’s capabilities were dismantled, while Palestinian factions have called for a permanent ceasefire and reconstruction guarantees.
Analysts say the success of the initiative will depend on sustained funding, regional buy-in and credible security arrangements that address Israeli concerns while ensuring humanitarian access for Gaza’s population.
International aid agencies have warned that reconstruction could take years, with housing, schools and healthcare facilities requiring urgent rebuilding.
Fragile peace
Despite the declaration, questions remain over the durability of the ceasefire. Previous truces have collapsed amid mutual accusations of violations.
Trump, however, expressed confidence that the new framework would hold. “This is not a pause,” he said. “This is the end of the war and the beginning of rebuilding.”
Whether the ambitious plan can translate into lasting stability in Gaza — a territory long marked by cycles of violence — will depend on political will, regional cooperation and the ability of international actors to maintain momentum beyond the initial ceasefire phase.
