Former Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential candidate Adewole Adebayo has criticised Senate President Godswill Akpabio over his role in the ongoing Electoral Act amendment debate, describing his actions as a threat to Nigeria’s democratic process.

Adebayo urged Akpabio to “remember his humble beginnings” and acknowledged that his political rise was made possible by the support of the people of Akwa Ibom State and Nigerians at large. “Where he is supposed to show leadership, he wants to make himself a mercenary to undermine democracy,” Adebayo said in a statement posted on social media.

The Electoral Act amendment has sparked nationwide debate, with critics warning that certain provisions could erode democratic principles, while supporters argue that reforms are necessary to strengthen electoral processes.

Adebayo’s comments highlight growing tensions within Nigeria’s political landscape as lawmakers consider changes that could significantly impact future elections.
