A support group within Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has called for the immediate suspension of impeachment proceedings against Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, warning that the move could destabilise the state and undermine a peace accord brokered by President Bola Tinubu.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the APC Progressive Mandate Group described the impeachment process as unconstitutional and politically driven, arguing that it poses a serious threat to political stability in Rivers State.

The group said the action against the governor and his deputy contradicts ongoing efforts to restore calm following months of political tension in the oil-rich state. It urged lawmakers in the Rivers State House of Assembly to exercise restraint and prioritise dialogue over confrontation.

According to the group, President Tinubu’s intervention had helped douse tensions among rival political actors, and any attempt to remove the governor through impeachment would jeopardise that fragile peace.

“The impeachment move is not only politically motivated but also capable of throwing the state into renewed crisis,” the statement said, calling on party leaders and national stakeholders to intervene.

Rivers State has been embroiled in a protracted political standoff involving the executive and factions within the legislature, raising concerns about governance and security. The latest call adds to mounting pressure on lawmakers to pause the impeachment process amid fears of wider political fallout.

Neither the Rivers State government nor the House of Assembly has officially responded to the group’s demand as of the time of publication.
