Club Brugge detonated a bombshell in Belgian football on Monday, dismissing head coach Nicky Hayen and reinstating former boss Ivan Leko with immediate effect. The dramatic move comes just two days before a pivotal UEFA Champions League showdown at home against Arsenal, underscoring a climate of crisis at the Jan Breydel Stadium after a precipitous dip in form.

The club’s abrupt announcement followed a 3-2 defeat at Sint-Truiden on Saturday, which solidified a dismal run of three losses in their last four Belgian Pro League matches. This sequence has left the reigning champions third in the table, five points adrift of leaders Union Saint-Gilloise.

Hayen’s departure marks a stark fall from grace. Promoted from assistant to full-time manager in March 2024 following Ronny Deila’s exit, he had steered the team to the Pro League title in his first full campaign. His overall tenure, which began in summer 2022 as head of the club’s youth side, boasted an impressive record of 61 wins from 101 matches. Yet, recent results proved unforgiving. “Club bids farewell to Nicky Hayen as head coach,” read the official statement. “Club would like to sincerely thank Nicky for his hard work during the recent period and wishes him all the best for the future.”

Stepping into the breach is a familiar face: Ivan Leko. The 47-year-old Croatian, a former Club Brugge player and Belgian Cup winner with the side, returns for a second spell as manager. His first tenure, from 2017 to 2019, delivered instant glory, including a Pro League title and a Supercup, cementing his legacy with a 54% win rate.

Leko’s return necessitated a swift and surprising exit from rivals KAA Gent, where he had been in charge since June 2025. The activation of a release clause in his contract reportedly blindsided Gent’s leadership. Chairman Sam Baro expressed his shock, stating, “I just learned through the press that Nicky Hayen has been dismissed from Club Brugge and that Ivan Leko is his successor.”

The timing is undeniably brutal. Leko’s first task is to prepare a team for the visit of an in-form Arsenal this Wednesday. European prospects are hanging in the balance. Under the revamped Champions League format, Club Brugge currently sit 26th with four points from five games. Their campaign has been a tale of stark contrasts: a thrilling 3-3 draw with Barcelona and a 4-1 rout of Monaco at home, but heavy away defeats to Bayern Munich (5-0) and Sporting CP (3-0). A top-24 finish is required to secure a knockout berth, a feat they achieved last season.

This decision lays bare the relentless pressure at a club with 18 domestic titles but ambitions for deeper European relevance. Hayen’s exit, despite his prior success, reflects an institution unwilling to tolerate a slide, having taken just three points from a possible twelve in recent league play. Leko now inherits a squad in need of immediate stabilization and an injection of the attacking verve that defined his previous spell. As Arsenal loom, the Blauw-Zwart faithful now look to a prodigal son to spark a rescue mission and salvage a season that is rapidly veering off course.
