The Katsina State Police Command has moved to reinforce security in schools across the state following fresh concerns over targeted attacks on educational institutions in parts of northern Nigeria.

The Commissioner of Police, Bello Shehu, issued a directive mandating the Coordinator of the School Protection Squad to reactivate and strengthen all existing protection systems for students and staff. The order was conveyed in a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abubakar Aliyu.

According to the statement, the police chief gave the instruction during a strategy session with tactical commanders where ongoing security measures were reviewed. He noted that the renewed action aligns with national directives.

Shehu said the measure was taken “in line with the directives of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, to prioritise safety and security around educational institutions.”

He further ordered the “deployment of additional resources to ensure the security especially in educational institutions,” a move aimed at discouraging attacks and restoring public confidence in the state’s learning environment.

The commissioner also appealed for stronger public cooperation. He urged residents to step up their support for ongoing security operations, stressing that safeguarding schools required joint vigilance. He advised the public to “timely report suspicious activities or concerns to the command.”

Recent reports have highlighted an unsettling rise in school-related attacks and abductions across northern states, with Kebbi and Niger recording disturbing incidents over the past week. The situation has forced some state governments to shut down schools temporarily as a precaution.

The Katsina command’s action comes at a time when the safety of schoolchildren has again returned to national focus, prompting calls for tighter surveillance and better community-security collaboration.
