L-R: President Bola Tinubu with DSS DG Adeola Ajayi

Adeola Ajayi, Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), met with President Bola Tinubu on Friday evening at the Presidential Villa to provide an update on Nigeria’s worsening security situation.

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, confirmed the meeting and shared a photograph of the briefing session on his X (formerly Twitter) page.

The meeting took place on the same day the federal government issued an immediate directive to close 47 Unity Colleges nationwide. The closure order, detailed in a circular released on Friday, cited the increasing security threats across multiple regions and emphasized the need to prevent potential breaches.

November has been marked by a series of alarming attacks targeting educational institutions and security forces. On November 17, gunmen attacked the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State, abducting approximately 25 female students and killing the school’s vice-principal.

Just days later, on November 21, armed assailants raided St. Mary’s School, a Catholic institution in the Papiri community of Agwara Local Government Area in Niger State, abducting over 300 students and staff.

Security forces have also faced deadly challenges. On November 18, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) ambushed a convoy of soldiers and Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) operatives in Borno State, killing Brigadier General Musa Uba.

In response to the escalating violence and rising kidnappings, President Tinubu cancelled a planned trip to South Africa on November 21, prioritizing efforts to tackle the growing national security crisis.
