In a shocking revelation during a recent TV interview, Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed accused some security agents of being involved in ransom collection for bandits. The governor expressed deep concern over the lack of accountability within the security forces and called for stricter measures to combat banditry in the country.

Governor Bala , expressing concern that some criminals are allowed to roam freely, called for stricter measures to eliminate them, similar to those implemented in a country like Niger.

He stated, “I have a lot of respect for my colleagues at the sub-national level and even at the federal level. I believe we must muster the courage and capacity to do all these things without sparing anybody.

“And we must have the sincerity to punish and reward. Even the security agencies know where these bandits live. You see some key members of the security forces participating in ransom collection. To me, it is very appalling when you have admittance of inefficiencies and lack of capacity.

“At the level of the emirs in Bauchi, we don’t agree for our traditional leaders to get involved with bandits because most of the demeanors are perpetuated at the local level.

“So, we are making them accountable. And that is why the issue of local government autonomy is good—it will allow local governments to take responsibility for local policing and local administration off the sleeves of governors.”

Governor Mohammed also appealed to President Bola Tinubu to prioritize the continuation of oil exploration in the Kolmani River area between Gombe and Bauchi states. He expressed disappointment that the project, which has the potential to benefit the entire North, has been seemingly abandoned.

Furthermore, Governor Mohammed disclosed that the North East Governors are collaborating to tackle the power challenges in their region by capitalizing on the deregulated electricity sector. The governor highlighted the abundant green energy resources in Bauchi and Gombe states and mentioned plans to establish a cement factory to boost the region’s economy.

As the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party Governors Forum, Governor Mohammed’s bold statements and calls for action have shed light on critical issues facing the nation. It is clear that he is committed to addressing security challenges, harnessing resources for economic development, and improving the overall well-being of the people of Bauchi State and the entire North East region.
