Nigeria’s safe hands, Chiamaka Nnadozie, has firmly cemented her legacy as African football’s most formidable goalkeeper, achieving a historic three-peat by clinching the CAF Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year award for 2025.
The 24-year-old Super Falcons stalwart received the prestigious honour on Wednesday evening at a glittering ceremony in Rabat, Morocco, seeing off fierce competition from Morocco’s Khadija Er-Rmichi and South Africa’s Andile Dlamini.
This latest triumph marks Nnadozie’s third straight victory in the category, a feat never before accomplished, solidifying her undisputed reign between the posts.
The past year has been nothing short of spectacular for the Nigerian number one, delivering match-winning performances for both her club and country. Her heroics were instrumental in the Super Falcons securing a record-extending 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title, where she kept four clean sheets and was deservedly named the tournament’s best goalkeeper.
Her club career followed a similarly impressive trajectory. After lifting the Coupe de France Féminine with Paris FC, she made a high-profile move to Brighton & Hove Albion in the English Women’s Super League. She announced her arrival with a Player of the Match debut, subsequently earning nominations for the WSL Save of the Month and the PFA Fans’ Player of the Month awards.
An elated Nnadozie, holding her award aloft, dedicated the win to her supporters. “This is an incredibly emotional moment for me,” she stated. “To be recognised in this way for the third time is more than a dream. This award is for every young girl in Nigeria and across Africa who dares to dream big. It shows that with hard work and belief, no barrier is too great to break.”
The ceremony also proved to be a successful night for Nigerian football, with the Super Falcons collectively being honoured for their WAFCON victory. However, the men’s Africa Player of the Year award was claimed by Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi.
Football pundits have hailed Nnadozie’s consistency and mental fortitude. “To dominate a continent for three years running is the mark of a true great,” said sports analyst Tunde Adelakun. “Chiamaka is not just a fantastic shot-stopper; she is a leader and an inspiration. Her journey is a testament to where dedication can lead.”
