The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is under mounting pressure to make public detailed state-by-state information on polling units, voting points and electoral wards across Nigeria.

The African Network for Peace and Good Governance (ANPGG) has formally requested the electoral body to publish comprehensive data that would enable citizens to easily identify their designated polling locations ahead of future elections.

In an open letter addressed to INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, the organisation’s Executive Director, Bede Aneke, called for the immediate disclosure of up-to-date information covering all states of the federation.

The correspondence, which was obtained by journalists in Enugu, specifically sought details on electoral wards, polling stations, and the number of voting points assigned to each polling station nationwide.

According to the letter, making such information publicly available would significantly help voters locate their polling stations and tackle longstanding accessibility challenges that have characterised previous elections.

“Publishing this data would not only assist voters but also enable independent monitoring of the electoral process,” the document stated.

The group further argued that public access to such comprehensive electoral data could support better election administration through improved resource allocation, enhanced planning, and more effective dispute resolution mechanisms.

Aneke used the opportunity to congratulate Professor Amupitan on his recent appointment as INEC Chairman, expressing optimism that his leadership would usher in a new era of transparency and credibility in Nigeria’s electoral system.
