The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has expressed its appreciation for the swift intervention of the Department of State Services (DSS) in securing the release of two journalists from Jay 101.9 FM, Ruth Marcus and Keshia Jang.

The duo were detained after posting a video on social media that highlighted a confrontation between a cleric and security personnel during the funeral of the late mother of the All Progressives Congress (APC) national chairman, Professor Nentawe Yilwatda Goshwe, in Plateau State.

The journalists’ arrest sparked concerns within the journalism community, drawing attention to the importance of press freedom and the need to protect journalists from undue interference while carrying out their duties.

In a statement issued by the NUJ, the union commended the Director-General of the DSS, Mr. Oluwatosin Ajayi, for his prompt response in ordering their release. “We appreciate the decisive action of Mr. Ajayi, who not only directed their immediate release but also reached out to the NUJ to apologise personally,” said the NUJ. The union further noted that Mr. Ajayi’s actions demonstrated a positive shift in the culture of Nigeria’s security institutions.

“This gesture shows a significant change in the approach of security agencies. We welcome the DSS leadership’s readiness to admit mistakes, apologise where necessary, and commit to reforms. This is crucial in restoring public trust and confidence in the agency,” the NUJ added.

The union urged the DSS to continue upholding these values and ensure the protection of journalists’ rights in the future. “Press freedom is the foundation of democracy. Journalists must never be seen as adversaries for simply doing their constitutional duty,” the NUJ emphasized.

While praising the DSS’s swift resolution, the NUJ also called for greater accountability within the security services. “It is vital that officers whose actions undermine democratic values are held accountable. This is essential for strengthening the rule of law and protecting constitutional rights,” the union concluded.

The NUJ reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining open and constructive dialogue with security agencies to promote professionalism and safeguard both press freedom and national security.

“Journalists must remain vigilant, courageous, and professional in carrying out their duties,” urged the National President of the NUJ, Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi.
