A clash has erupted between Chinedu Akubueze, Chief of Staff to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and the Clerk of the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, over conflicting statements on the Senate’s resumption date.

Akubueze on Monday announced a shift in plenary resumption from 23 September to 7 October 2025 — a move widely seen as exceeding his mandate.

Hours later, Clerk Ogunlana issued a parallel statement confirming the new date but emphasised that his notice was released “on the directive of the presiding officers of both Chambers.” He also clarified that committee work would continue during the recess.

The overlapping directives have fuelled speculation of tensions within the National Assembly, already under scrutiny following the suspension and reinstatement of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

Her sealed office, shut since her suspension in March, has now been reopened by Assembly security staff after she formally notified leadership of her intention to resume duties.
