Governor Muhammad Bago has invited the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) to conduct a full audit of Niger State’s financial records, a move he says will enhance accountability, correct discrepancies, and spotlight areas requiring reform.
Speaking in Minna at the opening of the 20th Northern Zone Accountants’ Conference, Mr Bago said the exercise would serve as a model for other states, underlining that transparency and fiscal discipline remain the bedrock of good governance and sustainable growth.
“The theme of this conference is timely and reflects our national realities. Accountability, rebuilding trust, fostering values, and stimulating economic growth are imperatives we must pursue relentlessly,” the governor said.
He reaffirmed his administration’s resolve to strengthen institutions of accountability, urging participants to put forward practical recommendations that could help governments at all levels build resilient systems and restore public confidence.
ICAN President Haruna Yahaya welcomed the partnership, assuring that the institute would carry out the audit independently and with the highest professional standards.
Also addressing the conference, Minister of Information and National Orientation Mohammed Idris stressed that accountability was central to President Bola Tinubu’s national agenda.
“Accountability is the cornerstone of every thriving society. At the ministry, we are deepening citizen engagement and strengthening open government initiatives. But accountability is a shared responsibility, and all Nigerians must embrace it if we are to unlock our nation’s future,” he said.
