The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has declared former Abia State Commissioner, Christopher Enweremadu, wanted over allegations of criminal conspiracy, diversion of public funds, and money laundering.
In a notice issued on Wednesday and signed by EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale, the anti-graft agency published Enweremadu’s last known address as the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Umuahia, Abia State.
“The public is hereby notified that CHRISTOPHER ENWEREMADU, whose photograph appears above, is wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in connection with an alleged case of criminal conspiracy, diversion of public funds, stealing and money laundering,” the statement read.
The EFCC urged anyone with useful information on Enweremadu’s whereabouts to contact its offices nationwide, including Abuja, Lagos, Kano, Port Harcourt, Enugu, Ibadan, Uyo, Sokoto, Maiduguri, Benin, Makurdi, Kaduna, Ilorin, and Gombe.
Enweremadu, who served as Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters under former Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, has previously been linked to investigations into the management of local government allocations in Abia.
In December 2024, an Abuja High Court ordered a probe into allocations to the state’s 17 local government areas between 2019 and 2023. The court also directed the EFCC to seize the international passports of Enweremadu, Erondu Uchenna Erondu – a former aide to Ikpeazu – and Joy Nwanju, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, pending the outcome of investigations.
The ruling followed an ex parte application by an activist, who alleged that billions of naira meant for local government councils during the period were siphoned by the officials.
The EFCC has yet to release further details of the transactions linked to Enweremadu in its latest declaration.
