Nigerian Olympic sprinter Favour Ofili has officially confirmed her decision to represent Turkey in international athletics, ending months of speculation surrounding her change of allegiance. The Port Harcourt-born athlete made the announcement on her social media platforms, describing the move as “from the heart, not from financial motives,” following a distinguished career representing Nigeria.
Ofili, who boasts an impressive record including six gold, two silver, and two bronze medals at championship levels, along with being a 200m Olympic finalist, expressed pride in her achievements wearing Nigerian colours. She said, “I am proud to have represented Nigeria for many years in a highly successful way.”
The switch follows a series of administrative challenges that hindered Ofili’s participation in both the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Olympic Games. She revealed that logistical issues, including missed communications about drug testing protocols for Tokyo and an overlooked submission for the 100m event in Paris, were major setbacks. Despite these frustrations, she emphasised, “This change comes from the heart, not from financial motives. I’m truly grateful to have discovered a new home in Turkey.”
As a 2022 Commonwealth Games silver medallist, Ofili joins a growing list of Nigerian athletes like Gloria Alozie and Francis Obikwelu who have competed for other countries. She extended gratitude to her coach, agent, sponsor Adidas, and supporters for their encouragement during this transition.
Ofili will miss the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Tokyo as she completes the formalities of her transfer but looks forward to the next chapter of her career competing in Turkish colours.
