President Bola Tinubu has approved a new policy that grants lifetime salaries to senior officers who retire from the ranks of Deputy Controller, Comptroller, or Commandant-General and above.
The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the landmark policy on Thursday at the 2025 Ministerial Retreat, highlighting it as a significant boost to officer welfare. A statement released by the Federal Fire Service’s Head of Corporate Services, DCF PO Abraham, confirmed the development.
According to the statement, Tunji-Ojo thanked President Tinubu for his “unwavering support,” stating that all agencies under the Ministry of Interior are benefiting from the “Renewed Hope Agenda.”
The minister also shared other key achievements, including the clearance of a “long-standing backlog of promotions,” which has resulted in over 50,000 officers being promoted in the past two years. He noted that future promotions will be based on a new system focused on “capacity and performance.”
In addition to the new salary policy, Tunji-Ojo revealed that the ministry has developed new training manuals and is constructing a “world-class Fire Academy” designed to rival institutions like the Arizona Fire Academy. He also stressed the importance of mental health support for officers and encouraged the Federal Fire Service to pursue partnerships with the private sector to improve infrastructure and modernize operations.
