The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has firmly rebuffed recent remarks by Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed, the 2023 Labour Party vice-presidential candidate, dismissing his critique of the opposition coalition as “personal views” that do not align with the party’s stance. In a polished statement issued by Deputy National Publicity Secretary Jackie Wayas, the ADC underscored its unwavering commitment to forging a robust, united opposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

During an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Senator Baba-Ahmed branded the opposition coalition as deceptive and incapable of steering Nigeria away from underdevelopment. He also declared his intent to run alongside Mr. Peter Obi in 2027. The ADC, however, countered that its coalition remains a formidable alliance dedicated to offering a credible alternative to President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

The ADC highlighted the coalition’s heavyweight lineup, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Governor Nasir El-Rufai, Senator David Mark, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, Rotimi Amaechi, and Mr. Peter Obi. The party emphasised that these leaders, united through extensive consultations, are driven by a shared vision to prioritise national interest and deliver competent, compassionate leadership.

The statement also recalled Mr. Peter Obi’s public endorsement of the ADC as the coalition’s platform for 2027. Obi, a pivotal figure in the alliance, has championed unity as essential to dismantling entrenched structures of poverty and insecurity, asserting that a revitalised Nigeria is within reach through collective effort.

Addressing Senator Baba-Ahmed’s comments, the ADC clarified that they reflect his personal perspective, not the coalition’s position. “Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed’s assertions are his own and do not represent the views of the ADC or its coalition partners,” Wayas stated. Extending an olive branch, the party praised Baba-Ahmed as a respected advocate for integrity and justice, urging him to join the coalition’s mission for a transformed Nigeria.
