Former Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido, has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to pay the ₦45 billion debt owed by the federal government to the family of the late Chief MKO Abiola.
Lamido made the call during the public presentation of his book, Being True To Myself, held in Abuja on Tuesday.
In his vote of thanks, Lamido stressed the urgency of resolving the financial obligation to Abiola—the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election—who was ultimately denied the presidency.
“I want to appeal to President Tinubu to close the chapter of June 12. In his book, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida confirmed that Abiola won the election,” Lamido said.
He added, “When I met with IBB, he acknowledged that Abiola is owed ₦45 billion. Abiola has been doubly punished: first, by being denied the presidency, and second, by the government owing him such a huge sum.”
Addressing the Minister of Information, who represented the President at the event, Lamido urged him to deliver the message to President Tinubu: “Please tell him to pay Abiola’s family the ₦45 billion. Settling this debt will finally close the June 12 chapter. It is very important.”
Lamido also used the occasion to express his gratitude to Allah, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, and others who contributed to the event’s success.
“All gratitude goes to Allah SWT for His endless bounties and for sparing our lives to witness this momentous day,” he remarked.
He paid a glowing tribute to former President Obasanjo, describing him as his “boss, guide, leader, and inspiration.” Lamido highlighted Obasanjo’s foreword in the book and his presence at the launch as marks of trust and confidence.
“Baba, I sincerely thank you. May God Almighty bless you with abundant health, wisdom, joy, and well-being,” Lamido stated.
Lamido also acknowledged General Abdulsalami Abubakar for his “professional truthfulness and service to Nigeria,” noting the former Head of State’s consistent support.
He praised the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, for his efforts in promoting religious harmony and for attending the event despite a busy schedule.
Further appreciation was extended to Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, who reviewed the book and has been a longtime friend and “MunChi comrade.” Lamido also commended the editorial team for their patience and resilience, the organizing committee for their tireless efforts, and the media subcommittee for generating nationwide interest in Being True To Myself.
