The Minister of State for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Tanko Sununu, has said that the federal government has successfully lifted 10 million Nigerians out of poverty.

Sununu said this in an interview on Arise News when he was asked about the previous government’s goal of lifting 100 million Nigerians out of poverty under APC — and its claim that 10 million had already been lifted — despite research from Premium Times and other organisations indicating that 10 million actually slipped into poverty instead.

He said, “You have quoted an official figure, we have lifted 10 people out of poverty, what you should ask now is what moved them back to poverty.”

He emphasised that sustainable poverty alleviation requires not just temporary relief but long-term structural solutions to prevent citizens from falling back into economic vulnerability.
