- The Federal Government is set to intensify its oversight of procurement processes within Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) by engaging external experts to monitor their activities.
This move, announced by the Director-General of the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP), Dr. Adebowale Adedokun, during a Procurement Clinic in Abuja on Tuesday, aims to enhance transparency and accountability in public spending.
Dr. Adedokun emphasized that MDAs will no longer have the sole discretion to select Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) for monitoring procurement, a measure designed to prevent potential collusion.
He further stated that the BPP will be actively involved in the procurement process, viewing it as a strategic tool for delivering value to Nigerians, rather than a mere transaction. To this end, capacity-building initiatives will be rolled out for BPP staff across all geopolitical zones.
The Procurement Clinic focused on key principles including procurement planning, record-keeping, and the utilization of the Nigeria Open Contracting Portal (NOCOPO) and e-advertisement. Dr. Adedokun underscored the importance of these areas in achieving cost-effectiveness, fostering competition, and upholding professionalism in public procurement, ultimately contributing to national development and shared prosperity in line with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
