Abuja, Nigeria – The Senate has announced a reshuffling of committee leadership, including key appointments to newly established development commission committees. This announcement follows President Bola Tinubu’s recent assent to bills establishing these commissions for various regions across the country.
Senator Isa Jibrin has been appointed as Vice Chairman of the Senate Committee on the North Central Development Commission. This appointment comes as the Senate begins its work overseeing the newly formed commissions.
Other key appointments include:
- North West Development Commission: Senator Babangida Hussaini (Chairman), Senator Muntari Dandutse (Deputy Chairman)
- South East Development Commission: Senator Orji Uzor Kalu (Chairman), Senator Kenneth Eze (Deputy Chairman)
In addition to the development commission appointments, the Senate also announced changes to the leadership of several standing committees: - FERMA: Senator Abdul Ningi (Chairman)
- Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organisations: Senator Natasha Akpoti Uduaghan (Chairman)
- Sports Development: Senator Garba Maidoki (Chairman)
- Local Content: Senator Joel Thomas (Chairman)
- National Population and NIMC: Senator Victor Umeh (Chairman)
Earlier in the session, Senate President Godswill Akpabio expressed satisfaction with the recently concluded budget defence sessions, commending lawmakers for their diligent work in scrutinizing the 2025 budget.
The Senate also observed a moment of silence in honor of Hon. Oriyomi Onanuga, former deputy majority whip in the House of Representatives, who passed away on January 15th. The Senate extended its condolences to the Speaker of the House and Hon. Onanuga’s family.
