Missouri Lawmaker Proposes Ending Term Limits for Presidents
Missouri Representative Ron Ogles has introduced legislation that would eliminate the constitutional limit on presidential terms. Currently, the 22nd Amendment restricts an individual to two terms in office.
Ogles argues that the current system hinders the ability to effectively address national challenges and limits the nation’s access to the most qualified leaders. He emphasized the need to “provide every resource necessary” to correct the perceived “disastrous course” of the current administration.
The 22nd Amendment was enacted in 1951, following the unprecedented four terms of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Its aim was to prevent the concentration of power in a single individual’s hands.
Ogles’ proposal faces significant hurdles. It would require the support of both Republicans and Democrats in Congress, as well as ratification by three-fourths of the states.
