Kano, Nigeria – In a significant political shift, Hon. Abbas Sani Abbas, the former Commissioner for Rural and Community Development in Kano State, has officially defected from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). This announcement was made during a visit to the Kano residence of the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, on Friday night.

Hon. Abbas’s defection is part of a broader trend, as hundreds of NNPP leaders from all 44 local government areas in Kano State have recently abandoned the party and the Kwankwsiyya movement. This wave of political realignment, referred to as the ‘Barau Tsunami,’ has seen thousands of NNPP members publicly discarding their red caps, a symbol of the Kwankwsiyya movement, in favor of the APC.

The recent political turbulence within the NNPP was further exacerbated by the dismissal of several key figures, including Hon. Abbas, following calls from some party leaders for the Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, to take more decisive action in governance.

During his visit, Hon. Abbas expressed his commitment to the APC, pledging to work diligently towards the party’s success across Kano State and beyond. Senator Barau, who also serves as the First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, warmly welcomed Hon. Abbas into the APC fold, alongside the APC Chairman in Kano State, Prince Abdullahi Abbas (Ɗan Sarki, Jikan Sarki), and other prominent party leaders.

Senator Barau reaffirmed the APC’s dedication to fostering a better future for the people of Kano State and all Nigerians. He emphasized that the party is inclusive and welcomes all who share a vision for good governance, service to humanity, and national development.

“The APC is big enough to accommodate all lovers of our great country. We will continue to promote the values of good governance and inclusivity,” Senator Barau stated.
