A serious security incident occurred at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on October 17, 2024, when policemen allegedly on unauthorized duty opened fire at the private jet wing, causing panic among diplomats and VIPs, according to sources cited by SaharaReporters.

The private jet wing, which caters to businesses, diplomats, and politicians, was disrupted around 10 PM when gunshots were heard. Witnesses reported that the shots were fired by a group of policemen from Iddo Police Station, led by Deputy Superintendent of Police Dauda and Assistant Superintendent of Police Usaini. The officers were reportedly not in uniform, leading to initial fears of a robbery.

An airport employee described the situation as a security breach, noting that the policemen did not have jurisdiction in the area and were conducting illegal arrests. The incident occurred shortly after diplomats arrived and while VIP passengers were preparing to board private jets.

Employees at the airport have accused officers from Iddo Police Station of frequently harassing staff and making illegal arrests, despite being stationed more than 5 km from the airport. Complaints of extortion and unauthorized detentions have been widespread.

Attempts to contact the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Iddo Police Station, Solomon Majit, for comments were unsuccessful.

In a related report, SaharaReporters detailed how officers from Iddo station conducted a series of illegal arrests under the guise of security raids, detaining over 20 individuals around the Bassa area of the Federal Capital Territory. Detainees reported being handcuffed, mistreated, and extorted for bail money.

During these operations, one officer reportedly lost his service rifle, although DPO Majit confirmed the weapon has since been recovered. He denied the raids were illegal, citing a need to address security concerns in the area.
