Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has urged northern politicians seeking Nigeria’s presidency to shelve their ambitions until 2031, saying power should remain in the South for another four years.
Mr Yusuf made the call on Sunday at the Kano Government House while unveiling 50 vehicles donated by Niger Delta businessman and political figure Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, for All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign mobilisation ahead of the 2027 elections. The governor argued that Nigeria should continue with an informal arrangement in which the presidency rotates between the North and South, with each region allowed to complete two consecutive terms.
“I urge support for President Bola Tinubu to complete his second term because this would allow the South to complete its two-term cycle before power returns to the North,” Mr Yusuf said.
He added that northern political stakeholders should exercise patience, saying: “After that, power will return to the North in 2031.”
Mr Yusuf said rotational presidency would promote fairness, equity, national cohesion and a sense of belonging among the country’s different regions.
The governor’s comments amount to an endorsement of President Tinubu’s bid for a second term in 2027 and a call for northern presidential aspirants to defer their ambitions until the following election cycle. (The Guardian Nigeria)
His remarks come as political parties and potential presidential candidates begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Mr Yusuf also called on politicians to conduct peaceful, issue-based campaigns, urging them to focus on policies and development plans rather than personal attacks.
“Let us focus on issues, policies and programmes and avoid actions that can undermine peace and unity,” he said.
The governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to peaceful democratic engagement and urged political actors to prioritise the unity and development of Kano State and Nigeria.
