Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo has renewed his criticism of former governor Peter Obi, questioning Mr Obi’s record in office and accusing some politicians of exploiting voters’ emotions during election periods.
Speaking ahead of the 2027 presidential election, Mr Soludo — who has declared his support for President Bola Tinubu — challenged Obi to account for what he had delivered to the Igbo people during his years in politics.
“Ask him: since he has been in politics, what has he brought for the Igbos?” Soludo said, citing persistent erosion problems in Anambra State as an example. “Why has the erosion crisis remained a major challenge in the state? What did he do about it during his years in office?”
Soludo accused politicians of returning only at election time to “play with our emotions” and urged voters not to “waste our votes” on leaders who fail to deliver lasting development. “It won’t happen again. 2027 will be different. We Igbos will get our own share this time around by voting right,” he said.
The governor’s comments come amid an escalating political and financial dispute between his administration and Mr Obi. The Anambra State government recently released details of what it described as financial obligations linked to previous administrations, including loans associated with Obi’s tenure.
Mr Obi has rejected the allegations, insisting he left office in 2014 without unpaid salaries, pensions, gratuities or outstanding obligations to contractors. He has challenged the state government to identify any person or contractor he owed when he left office, saying he would reconsider his 2027 presidential bid if such an obligation could be established.
The exchange adds to growing political tensions between the two former governors as the 2027 presidential contest approaches.
