The Federal Government has approved a ₦1 trillion Metropolitan Rail Service for Kano State in a bold move to modernise urban transport, ease congestion and stimulate economic growth across the ancient city’s sprawling metropolis.
Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, disclosed the approval while addressing members of the state’s delegation to the 2025 National Qur’anic Recitation Competition in Borno State, describing the project as a game-changer for mobility and commerce.
According to the governor, the rail scheme will deliver a modern, efficient and affordable mass transit system linking key districts within the metropolitan area, significantly reducing travel time and improving connectivity for millions of residents.
Governor Yusuf said the project would boost trade, attract fresh investment and raise living standards, positioning Kano as a leading transportation hub in Northern Nigeria.
He noted that his administration’s recent political realignment with the Federal Government led by the All Progressives Congress (APC) was a strategic decision aimed at unlocking major development projects for the state.
“This is a landmark intervention that will redefine movement within Kano and support our broader development goals,” the governor said, assuring residents that the state would work closely with relevant federal agencies to ensure transparent implementation and maximum public benefit.
He also expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for approving the initiative and reaffirmed his administration’s readiness to complement federal efforts with supportive policies and infrastructure.
Details of the approval were contained in a statement by the Director-General of Media and Publicity at the Kano Government House, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.
