A senior figure of the All Progressives Congress in Zamfara State, Umar Moriki, has been shot dead by gunmen believed to be armed bandits along the Gusau–Tsafe highway.
The attack happened early Saturday near Fegi village in Tsafe Local Government Area while the politician was travelling from Gusau to Kaduna. Channels Television first reported the incident.
The Zamfara State chapter of the APC, led by Tukur Danfulani, confirmed the killing, describing it as “a tragic loss for both the party and the state.” The party’s Publicity Secretary, Yusuf Idris, said Moriki had only just participated in a stakeholders’ meeting hosted by the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, hours before the attack.
Moriki was a well-known political figure in Zamfara, having served as Vice Chairman of Zurmi Local Government Area, Director-General of a state agency, and Special Adviser on Rural Electrification. He also contested the Zurmi/Shinkafi House of Representatives seat in 2023.
He died at 62 and is survived by three wives and several children.
The Zamfara APC paid tribute to him as “a committed party leader and community advocate who dedicated his life to public service and humanitarian work.”
