The United States has sharply condemned France’s decision to recognise a Palestinian state, branding it a “reckless” move that bolsters Hamas propaganda. In a pointed statement on X, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio denounced French President Emmanuel Macron’s plan, unveiled on Thursday, as a “setback for peace” and an affront to victims of Hamas’s October 7 attack on Israel.

Macron announced France’s historic decision to formally recognise Palestinian statehood at the UN General Assembly, citing the nation’s commitment to a just and lasting peace in the Middle East. “The French people want peace,” he stated on social media, amid rising global calls for Israel to halt its military operations in Gaza.

Rubio countered that the move undermines stability, warning it fuels Hamas’s agenda and jeopardizes the suffering of attack victims. The US stance underscores deep transatlantic tensions over the path to Middle East peace.
