The United States military is strengthening its collaboration with Nigeria as part of a broader strategic shift aimed at countering the evolving threat posed by the Islamic State across Africa, officials have confirmed.

The renewed engagement focuses on intelligence sharing, capacity building and specialised training for Nigerian security forces, as Washington adjusts its counter-terrorism posture to address the group’s expanding footprint beyond the Middle East. Analysts say West Africa has become a key theatre in Islamic State’s global operations, prompting closer coordination with regional partners.

Senior defence sources indicated that the partnership with Nigeria is designed to enhance the country’s ability to disrupt extremist networks, secure vulnerable border regions and improve rapid response capabilities. Support from the US military is also expected to include technical assistance and advisory roles, rather than large-scale troop deployments.

Nigeria has remained at the forefront of efforts to combat Islamist insurgency in the Lake Chad region, where Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and other extremist factions continue to mount attacks on military and civilian targets. Despite sustained operations by Nigerian forces, the insurgents have adapted their tactics, underscoring the need for improved surveillance, coordination and logistics.

Officials stressed that the deepened cooperation respects Nigeria’s sovereignty and is aligned with Abuja’s broader security priorities. The initiative also complements multilateral efforts involving neighbouring countries and international partners to stabilise the region and curb the flow of fighters, weapons and illicit financing.

The latest move signals Washington’s recognition of Africa’s growing strategic importance in the global fight against terrorism, as it recalibrates its military focus to prevent Islamic State from exploiting fragile states and ungoverned spaces.

Both sides expressed optimism that the enhanced partnership would yield tangible gains on the battlefield and contribute to long-term regional security.
