A faction of Nigeria’s opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by Kabiru Turaki, says it will go ahead with plans to ratify former President Goodluck Jonathan as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election despite opposition from the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

The group announced that the special convention will hold on Saturday at the A-Class Park and Event Centre in Abuja, dismissing threats and political pressure aimed at stopping the gathering.

The development signals deepening divisions within the PDP ahead of the next election cycle, with rival camps battling for control of the party’s direction and leadership.

Wike, a former governor of Rivers State and one of the PDP’s most influential figures, had reportedly opposed the move, raising concerns over the legitimacy of the convention and the growing tensions within the party.

However, Turaki’s camp insisted the event would proceed as planned, describing the ratification of Jonathan as a crucial step towards rebuilding the party and positioning it for the 2027 presidential contest.
