Several prominent Nigerian political figures, including Reno Omokri and Femi Fani-Kayode, on Wednesday appeared before the Senate for their ambassadorial screening, marking one of the most closely watched sessions of the ongoing confirmation process.
The nominees, drawn from diverse political and diplomatic backgrounds, took turns addressing the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, outlining their qualifications, policy priorities and plans to represent Nigeria on the global stage if confirmed.
Reno Omokri, an author and former presidential aide, spoke extensively on diaspora engagement, economic diplomacy and repositioning Nigeria’s image abroad. He pledged to strengthen bilateral relations with host nations and mobilise Nigerian professionals overseas to contribute more actively to national development.
Femi Fani-Kayode, a former Minister of Aviation, highlighted his experience in public service and foreign relations, assuring lawmakers that he would bring “credibility, firmness and strategic insight” to the role. He also addressed questions on national unity, conflict resolution and Nigeria’s foreign policy direction.
Other nominees present at the screening defended their credentials and shared their perspectives on boosting Nigeria’s interests in trade, security cooperation and international partnerships.
Senators scrutinised the candidates on issues ranging from diplomatic ethics and global engagement to national security and human rights, reaffirming the chamber’s commitment to a rigorous vetting process.
The Senate is expected to conclude its assessment and present recommendations to the full chamber for approval in the coming days.
