President Bola Tinubu’s scheduled nationwide broadcast for Democracy Day, set for 7 am on June 12, has been cancelled. Instead, the President will deliver his address during a joint session of the National Assembly.
The cancellation was announced in a statement issued on Wednesday by Segun Imohiosen, Director of Information and Public Relations at the Office of the Secretary to the Federation (OSGF).
“Due to H.E. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, scheduled attendance at the National Assembly Joint Session, the Presidential National Broadcast on June 12 has been cancelled,” the statement confirmed. “President Bola Ahmed will deliver his address from the National Assembly. All other plans are in order as announced earlier.”
Initially, the President was expected to address the nation via broadcast before attending the National Assembly session later in the day.
The inter-ministerial committee on Democracy Day had previously outlined activities for the celebration. Abdulhakeem Adeoye, speaking on behalf of the director of information and public relations, noted that there would be no parade this year.
A public lecture titled “Consolidating on the Gains of Nigeria’s Democracy: Necessity of Enduring Reforms” is scheduled for 4 pm at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja.
This year marks 26 years of uninterrupted democratic governance in Nigeria since the end of military rule in 1999. Democracy Day was observed on May 29 until former President Muhammadu Buhari moved it to June 12 in 2018. This change honored the annulled 1993 presidential election, widely considered Nigeria’s freest and fairest poll, which was won by the late MKO Abiola.
