The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Customs and Excise, Leke Abejide, has expressed confidence that President Bola Tinubu would achieve a significant victory in the event that former President Goodluck Jonathan decides to run in the 2027 presidential election.
In an interview on the Mic On podcast with Seun Okinbaloye, Abejide, who represents the Yagba East/Yagba West/Mopamuro Federal Constituency of Kogi State, predicted that Tinubu could win more than 32 states in a contest against Jonathan. He stated, “My prayer is that they should run like that (on different political platforms) and Asiwaju will win 32 states. He may lose maybe Anambra, Abia; he will win Ebonyi. He may win more than 32 states.”
Abejide, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), cautioned against Jonathan’s return to the presidential race, emphasizing that the current political landscape favors Tinubu. Jonathan, who served one term as president before losing to the late Muhammadu Buhari in 2015, has been the subject of speculation regarding a potential bid for the presidency in 2027.
Additionally, Abejide dismissed concerns about Tinubu’s waning popularity, pointing to the president’s recent travels across northern Nigeria as evidence of continued support. “I just came from Kano, I was in Kano on Wednesday and I slept there. I came to Kaduna by road yesterday morning. No insecurity, the road is very good. Then I came by train to Abuja this morning, and I can tell you that people are happy,” he remarked.
As the political landscape continues to evolve, the potential matchup between Tinubu and Jonathan is poised to be a focal point in the lead-up to the 2027 elections.
