President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged state governors to shift their focus from constructing what he described as unnecessary flyovers and instead invest in initiatives that directly improve the quality of life, security and economic wellbeing of Nigerians.
The President made the appeal while addressing governors during a meeting in Abuja, stressing that governance should be measured by its impact on citizens rather than the number of large infrastructure projects undertaken.
Tinubu said although infrastructure remains essential for development, projects must be driven by genuine public needs and not by political prestige. He encouraged state governments to channel more resources towards strengthening security, improving healthcare, expanding access to quality education, creating employment opportunities and providing other basic services that have a direct impact on people’s daily lives.
He noted that many communities across the country continue to grapple with insecurity, poor healthcare facilities and inadequate social amenities, insisting that these challenges deserve greater attention than costly projects with limited public benefit.
The President emphasised that government spending should reflect the priorities of ordinary Nigerians, urging governors to ensure that public funds are allocated prudently and transparently to projects that deliver measurable improvements in living standards.
Tinubu also called for closer collaboration between the Federal Government and the states in addressing security concerns, reducing poverty and accelerating economic growth, describing the welfare of citizens as the foremost responsibility of every level of government.
His remarks come amid growing public debate over the increasing number of flyover projects across several states, with critics questioning whether such developments should take precedence over pressing needs such as healthcare, education, housing, rural infrastructure and security.
The President reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to working with state governments to promote responsible governance, sustainable development and policies aimed at improving the lives of Nigerians.
