In a bold move to strengthen Nigeria’s pension sector, President Bola Tinubu has appointed renowned strategic policy analyst Opeyemi Agbaje as the new Chairman of the National Pension Commission (PENCOM), signaling a fresh direction for the agency.

Agbaje, a prominent voice critiquing Nigeria’s economic policies, confirmed his appointment to local media on Saturday. “On Monday, August 11, I received a call from the Honorable Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy informing me of my appointment as Chairman of the National Pension Commission,” Agbaje said in a statement.

The new chairman has already hit the ground running, meeting with PENCOM’s director general for an initial briefing on the commission’s operations. Agbaje, who serves as CEO of RTC Advisory Services Limited and executive producer of the Policy Council TV Show, brings a wealth of expertise to the role. His tenure on the board of the Lagos State Security Trust Fund from 2011 to 2019 further underscores his experience in high-level governance.

Agbaje’s appointment comes at a critical time as Nigeria seeks to bolster its pension system amid evolving economic challenges. His strategic insights are expected to drive reforms and enhance the commission’s impact on millions of Nigerian workers.
