SDP Strengthens Leadership Ahead of 2027 Elections: Uba, Abubakar, and Bello Join NWC

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has appointed key leaders to its National Working Committee (NWC), filling crucial vacancies at the party’s national secretariat. This decision underscores the party’s commitment to consolidating its leadership as it prepares to make a significant impact in the upcoming electoral landscape.

National Publicity Secretary Araba Rufus Aiyenigba confirmed that the appointments align with the SDP Constitution and the mandate from the National Convention, emphasizing the democratic principles that guide the party’s operations. “These appointments are a reflection of our dedication to strengthening the party’s foundation and ensuring we have the right leadership in place as we approach the elections,” Aiyenigba stated.

Chaired by National Chairman Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam, the NWC meeting resulted in the selection of three prominent figures who bring a wealth of experience and expertise to their new roles:

Senator Ugochukwu Uba – Deputy National Chairman (South)A seasoned politician from Anambra State, Uba has a rich history in public service and academia. He served as a senator from 2003 to 2007, where he played a pivotal role as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Marine Transport, contributing to the passage of the Cabotage Act. His tenure as Director-General and later Honourable Commissioner in Anambra State during the SDP administration of the late Governor Chukwuemeka Ezeife in 1992 highlights his deep-rooted connections within the party. Uba holds a first-class Bachelor’s degree and a Ph.D. in Political Science and was a senior lecturer at the University of Abuja until 2021, making him a valuable asset to the party’s leadership.

Dr. Sadiq Umar Abubakar – Deputy National Chairman (North)Hailing from Gombe State, Abubakar is an esteemed statistician with a Master’s in International Affairs and Diplomacy and a Ph.D. in Political Economy and Development. His extensive experience includes serving as the SDP’s pioneer National Secretary from 2010 to 2015 and as the party’s Governorship Candidate in Gombe State in 2011. Abubakar also chaired the SDP Convention Planning Committee in 2011 and was the pioneer Director-General of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Nigeria. His analytical skills and political acumen are expected to enhance the party’s strategic direction in the northern region.

Mr. Hussani Ado Bello – National Financial SecretaryA chartered accountant from Kano State, Bello brings extensive financial expertise to the NWC. With a background as a retired civil servant from both the Federal and Kano Civil Service Commissions, he has a proven track record in finance and public relations. Currently a Finance and Tax Consultant, Bello previously served as the SDP State Chairman of Kano in 2018, the Organizing Secretary of Kano State IPAC in 2019, and Chairman of the Forum of SDP State Chairmen in 2020. His financial acumen will be crucial in managing the party’s resources effectively as they gear up for the election.

Aiyenigba announced that these appointments, effective May 15, 2025, aim to fortify the party’s leadership structure as it gears up for the upcoming elections. The SDP is focused on building a cohesive team that can navigate the complexities of the electoral process and resonate with voters across the country. As the political landscape evolves, the party’s leadership is poised to drive its agenda forward, ensuring that the SDP remains a formidable contender in the 2027 elections.

With these strategic appointments, the Social Democratic Party is clearly signaling its intent to emerge stronger and more unified, ready to engage with the electorate and tackle the pressing issues facing the nation.
