The NASENI Solar Cell Plant in Gora, Nasarawa State, flagged off in 2022 by the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, remains uncompleted. Despite the huge investment, the project site is eerily quiet, with no workers in sight.

The plant, which was touted as a game-changer in Nigeria’s power and energy sector, was expected to produce 50MW of solar cells annually. The project was part of the Federal Government’s efforts to transform the country’s power and energy sector and boost the local economy.

Project Background

The project was initiated by the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) in collaboration with the China Great Wall Industry Corporation (CGWIC). The total cost of the project was $325.86 million, with 85% funding from China and 15% from Nigeria.

Expected Benefits

The plant was expected to provide several benefits, including:

  • Job creation: The plant was expected to create jobs for Nigerians in the renewable energy sector.
  • Alternative energy source: The plant would have provided an alternative source of energy, reducing the country’s reliance on fossil fuels.
  • Economic growth: The plant would have contributed to the growth of the local economy in Nasarawa State.

Current Status

Despite the lofty expectations, the project remains uncompleted. The site is abandoned, with no signs of construction work. This has raised concerns about the fate of the millions of dollars invested in the project.

The delay in completing the project has sparked worries about the government’s ability to deliver on its promises. Nigerians are left wondering if the project will ever be completed and if the invested funds are safe.
