An attempted invasion of the School of Nursing in Isanlu Makutu, Yagba East Local Government Area of Kogi State, was decisively repelled late Sunday night by courageous local vigilantes.
The suspected terrorists stormed the community in a bid to overrun the educational institution, causing widespread panic among students and residents. However, their attempt was thwarted after local security operatives swiftly responded, engaging the assailants in a fierce, hour-long gun battle.
Eyewitnesses who spokes to OBSERVERS TIMES recounted a tense standoff as the vigilantes exchanged heavy gunfire with the armed men.
“The situation was tense for some time, but the vigilantes stood their ground and drove them away,” a resident told reporters.
The determined resistance of the local security forces eventually proved overwhelming, forcing the attackers to retreat into the nearby bush. No immediate casualty figures among the vigilantes or students were available, but the successful defense prevented what could have been a major disaster for the institution.
Heightened Security Concerns
Following the foiled attack, security operatives have been promptly deployed to the community to prevent any further attempts and ensure the safety of students and residents.
This incident comes amidst a troubling escalation of violence in the region. Only hours prior, terrorists launched a deadly ambush on a commercial bus along the Ayere–Kabba road in the Ijumu Local Government Area with One passenger was confirmed dead at the general hospital and others are currently receiving treatment for gunshot injuries.
Residents confirmed to OBSERVERS TIMES that the Ayere–Kabba axis has become increasingly dangerous for travellers, with frequent attacks believed to be carried out by armed gangs operating between Kogi and neighbouring Kwara State.
The successful defense of the School of Nursing by local forces highlights the critical role of community security initiatives in counteracting the growing terrorist threat across parts of Kogi State.
