Russian President Vladimir Putin will not attend Pope Francis’ funeral, the Kremlin confirmed Tuesday, citing travel restrictions imposed by an International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant.
“No. The president has no such plans,” spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters regarding Putin’s attendance at the Saturday funeral.
The ICC warrant, issued over alleged forced deportation of Ukrainian children during Russia’s military operations, limits Putin’s travel, particularly to countries signatory to the Rome Statute, which compels them to execute ICC arrests.
Pope Francis died Monday at 87 after battling respiratory infections and mobility issues. He led the Catholic Church since 2013, emphasizing humility, peace, and interfaith dialogue.
The funeral is expected to attract global leaders and dignitaries.
