VATICAN CITY – Pope Francis, the leader of the Catholic Church, has died at the age of 88, the Vatican announced Monday.
The Holy See confirmed the pontiff’s passing occurred at 7:35 AM local time at his residence, the Casa Santa Marta, within the Vatican.
Cardinal Farrell, the Camerlengo of the Catholic Church, delivered the somber announcement. “With deep sorrow, I announce the death of our Holy Father Francis. The Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father,” he stated. “His life was dedicated to serving the Lord and His Church.”
The statement highlighted the Pope’s commitment to “the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage, and universal love, especially for the poorest and most marginalized.”
Pope Francis had been battling bilateral pneumonia and was recently discharged from hospital on March 23. On Easter Sunday, he appeared in good spirits, greeting crowds from the gallery of St. Peter’s Basilica after celebrating Mass.
Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on December 17, 1936, he became Pope on March 13, 2013, following the resignation of Benedict XVI. He was 76 at the time.
Pope Francis’s tenure was marked by his focus on social justice, environmental advocacy, and a more inclusive Church.
The Vatican is now preparing for the traditional ceremonies and the conclave to elect his successor.
