Former presidential aide Hakeem Baba-Ahmad has issued a stark warning over the strained relationship between National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu and former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, describing it as “poisonous” and potentially dangerous for Nigeria.
Baba-Ahmad made the remarks during a recent public commentary, expressing concern that personal and political tensions among key power brokers could undermine national cohesion and security coordination at a critical time for the country.
According to him, Nigeria is grappling with deep-seated challenges ranging from insecurity to economic hardship, and cannot afford internal rivalries among influential figures entrusted with stabilising the nation.
“When those at the centre of power are divided by ego or unresolved grievances, the consequences are borne by ordinary citizens,” Baba-Ahmad said. “This kind of relationship is not just unhealthy — it is dangerous.”
He stressed that the Office of the National Security Adviser requires unity of purpose and cooperation across political lines to effectively tackle terrorism, banditry and other security threats. Any lingering animosity, he argued, risks weakening institutional effectiveness and public confidence.
Baba-Ahmad further urged President Bola Tinubu’s administration to prioritise reconciliation and professionalism within government, warning that unchecked discord could derail ongoing efforts to restore stability and trust in governance.
The former aide also appealed to political leaders to rise above personal differences and place national interest first, noting that Nigerians are increasingly impatient with elite power struggles amid worsening living conditions.
His comments have sparked renewed debate across political circles and social media, with many calling for greater transparency and unity within the country’s security architecture.
As Nigeria navigates one of its most challenging periods in recent history, analysts say the ability of top officials to work together cohesively may prove decisive in shaping the nation’s path forward.
