A senior figure in Nigeria’s opposition has publicly criticised former presidential candidate Peter Obi, accusing him of failing to show leadership during internal turmoil within the Labour Party.

Speaking on Monday at the national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party, Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike said Obi benefited from the party’s platform during the 2023 presidential race but did not stand firm when the party faced a crisis.

“Peter Obi wanted to be president and they gave him a platform. When a crisis came in the Labour Party and that was the time for him to show leadership, he ran away,” Wike told party delegates.

The remarks come amid ongoing political realignments and tensions within Nigeria’s opposition landscape, where party disputes and shifting alliances continue to shape the build-up to future elections.
