Zacch Adedeji, the Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), has officially announced that he will not be contesting in the 2027 governorship election in Oyo State.

Adedeji made this declaration during a New Year service at his church in Iwo Ate, Ogo-Oluwa Local Government Area of Oyo on Thursday. His statement comes amidst speculation regarding his political ambitions, despite his lack of a public declaration until now.

In December 2024, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Youth Coalition for Good Governance suggested that Adedeji’s alleged political aspirations were distracting him from his duties.

However, during the New Year service, Adedeji emphasized his commitment to his current role, recalling his previous service as the Commissioner for Finance under the late Governor Abiola Ajimobi. He urged his supporters to pray for his continued success in his present position.

“I want to respond to a lot of requests. I, Zacch Adedeji, will not contest for the governorship election in 2027,” he stated. “I know many may be disappointed, but those who understand the responsibilities and grace bestowed upon us will recognize that I fulfilled my duties as finance commissioner 14 years ago. With God’s grace, we accomplished what was needed in the state.”

Adedeji, appointed by President Bola Tinubu as head of the FIRS in September 2023, previously served as the Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the National Sugar Development Council (NSDC).
