The Nigerian military has confirmed that 22 soldiers lost their lives during a recent clearance operation against terrorist strongholds in the North East, specifically in the notorious Timbuktu Triangle. The operation, conducted by troops of Operation Hadin Kai, commenced on Jan. 16 and is aimed at dismantling the entrenched presence of insurgents in the region.
In a press release, Major General Edward Buba, Director of Defence Media Operations, stated, “While we mourn the brave men who made the ultimate sacrifice, we must also acknowledge that our troops successfully neutralised over 70 terrorists, including three high-ranking commanders.” The fallen commanders include Talha, Mallam Umar, and Abu Yazeed, identified as key figures in the insurgency.
The military press statement was released just hours after local media reported that more than 20 soldiers had died in an ambush in the remote border community of Malumfatori. These reports also indicated that the attack resulted in the death of a military commander and the dislodgment of a key battalion in that area.
The military spokesman acknowledged that while there was indeed an attack that resulted in substantial losses for their troops, it did not occur at the location mentioned in the reports, nor did it lead to the dislodgment of any military base, as widely claimed.
Despite the heavy toll on Nigerian forces, General Buba emphasised that the operation continues unabated. “Our troops are well-prepared to counter the tactics employed by the terrorists, including the use of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and suicide bombers,” he noted. “We have successfully thwarted numerous attacks, including shooting down amateur drones used by the insurgents.”
The military has urged media outlets to refrain from publishing the names of the deceased soldiers until their next of kin have been formally notified, underscoring the sensitivity surrounding the losses.
As the operation unfolds, the public can expect further updates. “We are committed to ensuring the safety and security of our nation, and we will keep the public informed of our progress,” General Buba concluded.
The Nigerian military remains resolute in its campaign against insurgency, even as it grapples with the challenges posed by an adaptive and determined enemy.
