The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has warned the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to halt the enforcement of the tinted glass permit, describing the move as unlawful and contemptuous of the courts.
In a letter served on Thursday, the NBA reminded the police chief that the legality of the policy is already being challenged at the Federal High Court in Abuja. It stressed that the police, as a law enforcement body, must not act in defiance of judicial process.
The warning followed reports that officers enforcing the directive in Delta State impounded the vehicle of a judge of the National Industrial Court.
NBA-SPIDEL Chairman, Kunle Edun (SAN), said human rights committees across the association’s 130 branches had been activated to provide free legal support to motorists. He accused the police of turning the permit into a money-making scheme, estimating they could generate as much as ₦3 billion in a month.
The NBA cautioned the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, against “contemptuous” public statements insisting on enforcement despite the matter being before the court, warning it may initiate contempt proceedings against him.
The body urged the police to respect the rule of law, suspend the enforcement drive, and await the court’s ruling on whether the policy is legal and constitutional.
