Sheikh Ibrahim bin Adel Madani, one of the muezzins of the Grand Mosque in Makkah, has died, Saudi media report.
Sheikh Madani died on Monday, 21 September 2026, after serving as one of the voices responsible for the call to prayer at Islam’s holiest mosque. His death was reported by Saudi media and mourned by people associated with the Two Holy Mosques.
The circumstances surrounding his death were not immediately detailed by official sources, although some reports said he had been battling an illness.
His final call to prayer was the first Fajr adhan on Monday, according to reports citing footage shared by Inside the Haramain. The recording has since been widely circulated online as Muslims paid tribute to the late muezzin.
Sheikh Ibrahim was among the 24 principal muezzins of the Grand Mosque, with six taking turns each day to deliver the calls to the five daily prayers and the first Fajr call. He was particularly known for delivering the Fajr adhan and takbirs, as well as performing tabligh — relaying the imam’s words from the mosque’s microphone system.
Reports say he was born in Madinah and began calling the adhan at a neighbourhood mosque as a teenager. He was formally appointed as a muezzin at the Grand Mosque around 2018, having developed familiarity with both the Madinah and Makkah traditions of the call to prayer.
In a previous interview, Sheikh Ibrahim recalled becoming emotional during his first adhan at the Grand Mosque after seeing worshippers circumambulating the Kaaba while listening to his voice. He reportedly expressed humility about being given the opportunity to call Muslims to prayer from such a sacred place.
Funeral prayers for Sheikh Ibrahim were scheduled to be held after Asr prayer at the Grand Mosque, with reports saying he would be buried at Al-Mualla Cemetery in Makkah.
His death has prompted an outpouring of tributes, with recordings of his distinctive adhan and takbirs being shared across social media.
