The Lekki Central Mosque has removed its contentious banner that read, “Jesus Christ is Not God,” following a wave of mixed reactions on X (formerly Twitter), a popular microblogging platform.
Adeleke Opeyemi, a user on X, shared a video featuring Tunde Alabi, a member of the Lekki Muslim Community, who visited the mosque to verify the banner’s removal. In the video, Alabi stated, “My name is Tunde Alabi. I am a member of the Lekki Muslim Community. I noticed a banner pasted in front of our mosque that was causing some controversies. I reached out to the mosque community and was informed that it had been taken down, so I came to confirm for myself. As you can see, the banner that was removed is behind me.”
Alabi also expressed regret for any discomfort the banner may have caused, clarifying, “I am not speaking on behalf of the mosque. I am speaking for myself. I apologize for any inconvenience this might have caused. Today is the 18th of December.”
The banner attracted significant attention after Nigerian actress Wumi Tuase took to X to voice her concerns about its placement outside the mosque. She remarked, “I don’t like to get into religious conversations, but I found it very weird that Lekki Central Mosque has this in front of their gate.”
Tuase’s post sparked a broader discussion on religious tolerance between Christians and Muslims in Nigeria, highlighting the sensitivities surrounding interfaith dialogue in the country.
